Age Certification: Responsibility, Not Censorship | Peter Hughes
Any conversation about age gates on the internet quickly triggers the censorship alarm. I understand why. The web has been a powerful open space. But there is a meaningful difference between restricting speech and signalling suitability. Voluntary participation The approach I care about is opt in. Website owners choose to certify. Users choose whether to enforce those certificates. Nobody is forced into a single global standard. User empowerment The control sits with the user, or with caregivers for young users. That can be implemented through browsers, devices, or plugins. The website provides a clear signal. The user decides what to do with it. Why this matters We have already built powerful filtering systems, but they are opaque. They are often driven by business incentives. A transparent, voluntary rating signal gives power back to families and educators. It is not perfect. But it is a conversation worth having.
