Behind the Scenes: How the Internet Works | Peter Hughes
Most of the time the internet feels like magic. Type a name, hit enter, and a page appears. Under the hood, it is a chain of small systems doing their jobs. When you understand the chain, you build better, troubleshoot faster, and make smarter decisions about security. The short version - DNS. Turns a human name into an IP address. - Routing. Gets your request across networks to the right server. - HTTP or HTTPS. Defines how data is requested and returned. HTTPS adds encryption. - Server and application. Generates the response, often using databases and services. - Caching and delivery. Speeds things up and reduces load. Why I still care about basics Most reliability issues are not exotic. They are usually DNS, certificates, caching, timeouts, or capacity. Knowing the basics turns panic into a checklist. And in a world where everything is connected, basics are often the difference between secure by design and secure by accident.
