Growing Older in a Digital World | Peter Hughes
We have all built a digital footprint, whether we intended to or not. Banking, photos, bills, identity, health portals, family messages. A lot of life now lives behind logins. As people age, the challenge is not only learning tools. It is staying secure while staying connected. Accessibility is not optional Simpler interfaces, better defaults, and clearer recovery paths matter. If security becomes too complex, people bypass it. If recovery becomes too hard, people give up. Delegation is the missing feature Most platforms assume one person, one login, one device. Real life is messier. Couples share responsibilities. Adult children support parents. Sometimes someone needs help, temporarily or permanently. We need better delegation models that are auditable, time bound, and privacy preserving. Not password sharing. Proper permission design. The goal Technology should not become a barrier to independence. The right design choices can preserve autonomy, safety, and dignity for longer.
